Klaatu are the beatles?
Article by Steve Smith that changed the trajectory of the band.
Who was Klaatu?
Klaatu was a Canadian— prog/psych pop band formed by John Woloschuk, Dee Long and Terry draper and signed under Capitol records.
Klaatu released an album titled "3:47 EST" which was released on the August 11th 1976 and as the album was credited to no one because of the band's desire to keep the anonymity it was on the shelves for months before a journalist named Steve Smith on February 17th 1977 published a article titled "Could Klaatu be the Beatles?" prior the article band had sold about 7-8k records and after the article band ended up selling more than half a million records.
The rumors were that the Beatles were making music under the name of Klaatu whilst capitol records were aware of the identity of the band but they kept is a secret for financial reasons which ended up costing them more at the latter years.
Aftermath:
A man named Dwight Douglas went to the U.S. Copyright Office at the Library of Congress found out that the songs on the albums were credited to John Woloschuk, Dee Long and Terry draper instead of the Beatles - John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Richard Starkey after finding out he broke the news on April 18, 1977.
Why was the band anonymous?
The reason for anonymity by the band was they wanted people to focus solely on their craft and not their physical appearance but the rumors ended up costing them their career in the longer run because when the public found out that they were in fact not Beatles the public lost interest because they felt cheated on.
Life after the identity reveal:
Klaatu would end up releasing their album "Hope" which was finished and released later in the same year on the September 12th would end up becoming a commercial flop irrespective of that it was considered their best piece of work in the latter years, due to the pressure by the record label they would go on to make three more albums and then call it quits in 1982. All the band members ended up leaving their musical careers and pursued life out of music, years later the band would end up being becoming a cult favorite.
Personal favorite tracks of mine from the album:
1. Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft
2. California Jam
3. Anus of Uranus
4. Sub rosa Subway
5. Little Neutrino

in the end, unrealistic expectations killed their dream and band….
