In 2026, my son underwent his 2nd open heart surgery. When dark clouds of fear and uncertainty threatened to envelope me, this album provided a Raye of light… As much as it is soaked in heartache, I can confirm that this music does indeed contain hope. There is a grand narrative at work here: a cinematic scope to the writing and performance, along with flourishes of production and arrangement that make this album a delight to listen to as an actual album (tracks played from beginning to end and in the intended sequence). While it’s a cohesive body of work, the song “Life Boat.” punctuates the album in a markedly different style from the other tracks. With a darkly pulsating and swelling EDM backbone, it features a line repeated by an ensemble of archetype voices: “I’m not giving up yet.” This was the mantra that I needed at the time I first heard it: it was the life boat I clung to during the storm. I’m still hanging on (and I’m still not giving up yet).
