Pink Moon sold a few thousand copies in Drake’s lifetime. In 2000, it sold 74,000 in the US alone.
Island spent its whole promotional budget on full-page adverts, and it still didn’t sell. Drake died in November 1974, aged 26. In November 1999 the title track was used in a US television advert for Volkswagen, and sales rose.
