Not the room, not beginning, not the crowd, not winning. At first I thought the song overstayed its welcome, I use to skip the last 2 minutes. The composition of the primary pieces of the song is simple, with 3 chords and a consistent arrangement. That would be the end of the conversation for anyone else, but the secret sauce that spices up this song is the band. This rich emotion that we get from Adrianne Lenker’s vocal on the track gives me chills every time. Her growl makes me wanna convulse and foam at the mouth. The song gets broken down by a sporadic guitar solo that holds similar emotion to that in the vocals. “Not” recently got placed in Rolling Stone’s top 200 rock songs of the century (so far), and I couldn’t be happier about it. This is one of the rawest things we’ve seen, an electric guitar driven rock song from a band most known for their acoustic leading country/folk tracks. A truly essential song for anyone that prides themselves as a music fan, “Not” by Big Thief is a truly immortal song that deserves nothing less than to be passed down, generation by generation, like great poems and myths of the past.
