Reel Around the Fountain - 2011 Remaster

Really beautiful song, memorable lyrics "I dreamt about you last night and I fell out of bed twice You can pin and mount me Like a butterfly" The piano is an interesting touch. I prefer the David Jensen recording far more though, that one has driven me to tears.

Pretty Girls Make Graves - 2011 Remaster

Really great song, despite the mixing being kinda damaging to most songs on this album, this one is well done. I love the lyrics: "Oh I could've been wild and I could've been free but nature played this trick on me" David Jensen recording is great too though less upbeat, and it's also worth checking out recordings of this song being played live. There's a not so loud extra guitar track in the third section of the song, and at some point in its time being played live it was added as this really funky part of it, much more prominent.

Miserable Lie - 2011 Remaster

A song that kind of suffers from the poor mixing unofrtunately, which is sad because in other renditions it truly shines. The intro is nice, but otherwise the guitars are too mellow for this, and Morrissey's voice is a little irritable with the mixing. I love his yodeling at the end though. Very honest, angsty lyrics. Later live performances of this song added an extra intro to the song that sounds really lovely. In its final performance, which was The Smiths' final concert, it was played connected to the end of their song London, and it's really cool.

Still Ill - 2011 Remaster

Perhaps played too slow, but still a really catchy iconic song with nice, depressing lyrics that describe the numb feelings of life. I love the idea that Morrissey's "illness" is a metaphor for his sexuality and the way it was viewed. Love his singing at the end, and the guitar intro and end is fun. The John Peel recording is really interesting as it features a harmonica at the start, similar to Hand in Glove. It's a fun addition but perhaps not fit for it. "Under the iron bridge we kissed and although I ended up with sore lips."

Hand in Glove - 2011 Remaster

It's awfully ironic that its final lyric "I'll probably never see you again" was played as the last song of The Smiths' final performance. Heartbreaking. Really powerful lyrics expressing the "love" Morrissey felt with Johnny Marr by his side, it's symbolic of the forming of their band. It has a nice melody to it.

This Charming Man - 2011 Remaster

The mixing on this song is incredible. There are so many guitar tracks played over each other and the final result has such a rich sound. And what a catchy melody. Andy Rourke's bass line is super good. Whenever I hear the intro guitar this song makes me jump. And I adore the lyrics and the story this song tells. It's really romantic. I like the idea that unfortunately the man abandons the narrator in the end during the second section. You can tell by change from "return the rings" to "return the ring". In some live performances Morrissey also switches the words in this section from the man calling the narrator "handsome" to "ugly". The rings part feels connected to the song William It Was Really Nothing, where the singer feels pity for William who goes through his marriage with a woman he doesn't even love, perhaps because the pressure of society to be straight.
