It was the year 2016, and my English teacher had decided to form a band. The idea was to promote Western music among the students. I don’t know how, but I somehow found myself among a group of considerably talented peers, all competing for a spot in the band. And, much to my surprise, I made the cut!
My role? One of the vocalists.
For context, we had drums, keys, guitar, bass, and four singers - two guys and two girls. I still don’t know why we were so heavily stacked in the vocal dept, but hey, who’s gonna complain?
For almost a month or two, we had the time of our lives. Skipping classes, sneaking off to rehearsals, and spending hours talking music together. And the very first song we chose was “Summer of ’69” by Bryan Adams. And what a song it was. For the first time I was actively watching my friends working with sheet music. Trying to act smart amongst my friends who were already familiar I truly mad a mockery of myself. But, you know what? What a summer that was!
But, alas, all good things must come to an end. Our little band was eventually disbanded by our teacher due to some academic concerns. Still, those few weeks remain one of the fondest memories in my books. A little chapter of my school life that I wish had lasted just a little longer.
(Note - I wish I could attach a photograph, if I had any. But phones weren’t allowed in school. And, also we officially didn’t perform a single song as a band)
