Home Tonight
In my middle period of Roman lakes (around 2015 or so) I had acquired a little Taylor guitar. I recorded a demo of 'Home Tonight' that had a great atmosphere, but was pretty rough around the edges. It turned out to be a very straightforward, melodic and catchy song. Flash forward to 2018 or so, I began learning Spanish. I practiced with lots of people online and ended up taking two trips - one to Spain and one to Argentina. I met my girlfriend in Argentina and decided to move out there. I lived there for almost a year and then we came to England, but we could only share six months together in the UK before she had to go back. In the weeks after she left, I distracted myself by diving head on into my music, which I had neglected for a good five years or so after 'Falling In'. I recorded four songs (new and old) on my Taylor, and Home Tonight was the most polished one that came out. I tried to recreate the original vibe of the demo, but something pretty different came out - less intimate, more upbeat. I think it's a good entry point for new listeners of my music. Not everything was useable from those weeks of recording, but it set the groundwork for a new Roman Lakes era where I feel I've come of age a little bit. I intend for this song to be the first of my 'Porch Birds' project - an EP or perhaps even album of songs in a similar vein.
