Emperor XIII in Shades - Live at Carnegie Hall
It’s taken me a little while to get to the core of my thoughts on this album and I still feel like I haven’t fully taken it in. The way in which feelings of despair, sadness and loneliness are distilled by Cameron Winter on this album are special, the lyrics are corse, effortless, beautiful it feels like we’re watching a one in a generation songwriter be birthed right in front of us. Musically it has a unique blend of old American trail music, Leonard Cohen, and of course Nina Simone, with profound (and profane), passionate performances. I’m not kidding this time, I wouldn’t joke about this. AOTY for sure.
