Elliott Smith
Elliott Smith was born Steven. “Steve” sounded like a jock, he said.
He grew up in Texas, started piano at nine, and moved to Portland at 14 to live with his father, where he borrowed a four-track. After high school he started calling himself Elliott. He played in Heatmiser before going solo. Miss Misery, from Good Will Hunting, was nominated for an Oscar in 1998. He died in 2003, aged 34.
