- Moonlight Mile - 2009 MixThe Rolling Stones This song is undoubtedly one of the greatest ballads of all time. Serving as the final track of the monumental album that is Sticky Fingers, Moonlight Mile is a poignant piece that truly captures what makes the Rolling Stones so great. It starts slow and simple, with Jagger’s tender and weary voice setting the emotional atmosphere. One can really tell that this was the last song they recorded in the studio, after countless grueling late-night sessions. Jagger sings of traveling on his lonesome, a reference to the Stones’ endless touring, longing to be home with his lover. The instrumental swells during his refrains, creating small climactic peaks as the song builds further and further. During the bridge, you can hear this progression until that cathartic point when the strings come in. The strings then build alongside Jagger’s evocative shouting to create a fulfilling crescendo. It’s such a fitting finale that captures the feeling of weariness and closure like few if any others do.
- MoorestownSun Kil Moon This track is such quintessential Mark Kozolek. The sparse and stripped-back instrumentals paired with cool, piercing vocals create a serene yet melancholic atmosphere. Kozolek is so proficient at spinning narratives and conjuring distinct imagery over the course of a few mere minutes. This song feels like a distant memory of my own… of a time that’s been lost to that stream of consciousness
