- Who Do You Believe In2Pac Not really in my pac era anymore, but this is such a masterclass. Such dense lyricism whilst also sampling Jamiroquai’s manifest destiny - a track already rooted in major political and social messaging? mwah mwah chefs kiss
- AmoebaClairo lyrical content aside, this track just screams wanderlust. i just wanna explore, and this brings it out of me
- Coming DownThe Weeknd a very sad hangover song. thanks abel, your emotion is always captured through your music
- King for a DayJamiroquai Jay def had feelings for Stuart Zender and the lack of bass on this diss track proves it
- Baby Come BackPlayer if this song came on the radio in a crisp, cold 1977 evening after i got dumped i’d swerve onto oncoming traffic
- Ladies NightKool & The Gang i bet back in the day some girlie got all dolled up with high heels on n stuff only to trip and fall on the dance floor cuz the groove is just undeniable
- If You Want Tobeabadoobee I feel like this track (especially when paired with the music video) has more to it than just being some regular 2018 bedroom pop tune, if it’s my brain or Bea’s actual intention, idk! Obviously the focus of the lyrics is the struggles with insomnia, and the plea for a special someone, but I also feel as though she’s also conveying the mundaneness of life and coping mechanisms, gaining freedom thru music. There’s a tight character limit, I’ll just condense. The music videos striking colours (the reds and the blues) symbolises her internal struggle - the reds of her hair reflecting her true emotion, and the blue (the window, and the outfit she performs in during the chorus) being the life she lives, and a facade she fronts. The hair covering the faces of her band representing alienation from others and identity. The transition in the choruses from her bed, to the blank whites (a blank slate), to finally the glaring red lights representing her starting to get to grips with her life. idk
- Too Young to DieJamiroquai I can (and did!) write thousands of words to describe the pure magic oozing from this track. But less is sometimes more, taking inspiration from this track! Jay Kay’s scat singing chorus coming from a place of pure anger, too much that he couldn’t even come up with a substantial chorus to truly get his message across. Then, the final verse hits. When I say that verse opened eyes, I know from experience. Quite frankly a lot of this track is just common sense, unfortunately people didn’t listen with their brain 33 years ago.
