Chasing Moving Trains

two years ago today, roy blair dropped his sophomore studio album, ‘chasing moving trains’, and it was the same day in which i had to drive down to virginia during the single-digit hours of the night, to visit my dying grandmother. i could say a lot about that weekend, but i’d rather focus on this album. i got to listen to it for the first time in complete blackness, with just me and the open road and the silhouettes of trees passing at 70 miles an hour to the left and the right of me and it felt magical. this song in particular means so much to me. it’s a 9 minute long song, the longest track in roy’s discography ever, and the chorus of the song has such gut-wrenching, blunt lyrics, those being “i’m sorry but i’m looking out for myself now”. the entire song is an introspective look on learning how to live with yourself after everything one’s been through, at least that’s the way i look at it, and i had to learn this lesson during my weekend in virginia. i cried to this song on the way back up, and i cried to this song a year later too, simultaneously a year ago now, when roy played the entire album front to back, his first live performance in a longer time than i had been a fan. it’s such a beautiful song, and this is such a beautiful album. roy is such a versatile artist, and i think that this is the pinnacle of his career, at least for now. i can’t wait to see what he delivers whenever he does decide to deliver again. thanks.
