A lot of musicians spend their whole lives trying to replicate Coltrane’s most famous era, his quartet with Elvin and McCoy. I used to joke that, if we all practice 30 hours a day, someone might do a halfway decent Coltrane impression, and we can finally record a decent tribute album. This is after that era. Trane with Alice and Rashied. How it works is even more mysterious. It’s more liquid. It reads as somehow more scary to me—more spirt, further into another plane. There’s more drama in each moment. Nobody will ever sound like this.
