  1. There’s no OtherFelly My friend cancelled on our gay guy combo costume at the last minute, so I am going as pre-wish Nikki for Halloween. My friends couldn’t really tell. It turns out that I dress like a cool girl every day. This song: it is important to have fun, and it’s important to be needed. It’s great to have art that does both.
  2. Night ShiftLucy Dacus In Light Years, James Salter writes: “After endless depression, nights without sleep, realization that the life he had entered was calamitous, without hope, he slowly became lucid, even calm. He was able to read and think. The days dawned quietly. I am through it, he thought. Like the survivor of a wreck, he took stock of himself. He touched his limbs, his face, he began the essential process of forgetting what had passed.”
  3. Nike AirLil B When things feel harder than they should, I like to take a brisk walk outside and give a couple listens to Nike Air.
  4. OgundeJohn Coltrane A lot of musicians spend their whole lives trying to replicate Coltrane’s most famous era, his quartet with Elvin and McCoy. I used to joke that, if we all practice 30 hours a day, someone might do a halfway decent Coltrane impression, and we can finally record a decent tribute album. This is after that era. Trane with Alice and Rashied. How it works is even more mysterious. It’s more liquid. It reads as somehow more scary to me—more spirt, further into another plane. There’s more drama in each moment. Nobody will ever sound like this.
  5. Pink MoonNick Drake I have been reading about very early photographers. For a long time, it was a massive struggle to get a coherent photograph. It is so crushing to get a super over or under exposed frame, or a super out of focus one, so decisions were about avoiding that before anything else. The Wikipedia article for the album states, “(Nick) Drake appeared to have made a decision before recording his third album that it would be as plain as possible,” and maybe that’s a worthwhile exercise, to try and make art that is plain. Art that is easy to hear and see.
  6. RaindropsElori Saxl I have felt, for a while, that songs feel too fast. I finally found a song that moves at the right pace.
