First Light Hozier

First Light - Hozier (english)

my favorite song in the whole wide world

“could this be how every day begins?”
I think this is such a beautiful, yet at the same time heartbreaking way to describe what it feels like when you finally start finding happiness again after a long and difficult period. When you’ve become so used to sadness and tension that they almost start to feel normal. At some point, sadness can even begin to feel comforting and safe, not because you enjoy being unhappy, but because it’s become so familiar. And when you finally wake up again without that heavy feeling, without immediately being afraid of something or having something to worry about, it almost feels unreal. As if you suddenly realize that life can actually feel like this. That you don’t have to start every single day feeling sad or uncertain. And maybe that’s what I love most about this lyric. That alongside the sadness of remembering how things used to be, there’s also so much hope and relief. Because you’re slowly discovering how wonderful it actually feels to be happy and emotionally safe. And for the first time in what feels like forever, you dare to hope that this isn’t just a temporary feeling, but that maybe life can start feeling like this more often.
“like i lived my whole life before the first light”
I think this is such a heartbreaking, yet incredibly hopeful way to look back on a period when you didn’t even realize how different life could feel. When you’ve spent so long being used to sadness and uncertainty, sometimes you only realize afterwards just how much they actually affected you. I look back at the person I was back then with so much understanding and, in a way, even a little bit of pity. Not because she was weak, but because she simply didn’t know any better. She had become so used to the way life felt at the time that she might not even have realized things could be different. And I think the most beautiful thing about this lyric is that it reminds you that even after the darkest periods, there can still be light. That the sadness that once seemed to define your entire life might, looking back, simply have been the part of your story before the light finally came.
And there’s something so comforting about that thought. Because when you’re in the middle of a period like that, you genuinely can’t imagine ever feeling any differently. You don’t know when things will get better, and sometimes you don’t even notice that they’re slowly starting to change. Until one day, you look back and realize that you’ve somehow reached a place you once could only have dreamed of being. And in a way, it hurts to realize how much time you spent in the darkness, but at the same time, I’m so grateful that I now know what the light feels like. Because I can finally look back on that period as a part of my life, rather than feeling like it is my entire life.
“darkness always finds you either way”
I think this is such a painful, yet strangely comforting way to describe how your past can sometimes continue to haunt you, even when you’ve finally reached a much happier place in life. Because just because you’ve made it out of a dark period doesn’t mean that all the feelings and fears you experienced back then have suddenly disappeared. I think there will always be a part of me that’s afraid of falling back into the way I used to feel. Especially because I know how easily sadness and anxiety can start to feel familiar again, and how much effort it can sometimes take to keep feeling okay. And maybe that’s exactly what makes it so difficult to fully enjoy happiness sometimes. Because you know what it feels like to lose it, and somewhere deep down, you’re afraid it might happen again.
But I also think this lyric reminds me that darkness isn’t something you constantly have to run away from. That you’re allowed to be afraid of falling back into old patterns without that fear meaning it’s actually going to happen. And that having a bad day doesn’t automatically mean you’re back where you started. Sometimes old feelings simply resurface for a little while, and that doesn’t mean all the progress you’ve made has disappeared. Maybe, in the end, it’s not about never experiencing sadness or anxiety again, but about learning that those feelings are allowed to exist without having to take over your entire life again.
“it creeps into the corners as the moment fades”
I think this is such a painful way to describe how sadness can sometimes slowly and almost unnoticed find its way back into your life. Not necessarily because something bad has happened, but sometimes simply because a happy moment has come to an end and you’re left alone with your own thoughts again. I relate so much to that feeling of suddenly experiencing this strange emptiness after having an incredibly wonderful day. As if all the happiness and warmth of being surrounded by people slowly fade away, leaving room for feelings you thought you’d finally left behind.
Especially during moments when I’m not taking as good care of myself, or when I simply don’t have the energy to do the things that normally help me, I notice how easily I can slip back into old thought patterns. How quickly a few days of feeling a little down can turn into feeling like I don’t want to do anything at all. And sometimes, thoughts even start creeping in that I don’t actually deserve the happiness I just experienced. I find it so heartbreaking that something beautiful can sometimes be followed by such negative feelings, almost as if you constantly have to remind yourself that you’re allowed to be happy too.
But at the same time, I think this lyric also shows that you can’t always leave your past completely behind. That old fears and feelings can sometimes resurface without that meaning you’ve become the person you used to be again. And maybe that’s the most important thing to remember. That the end of a happy moment doesn’t mean happiness itself has disappeared, and that sadness returning doesn’t mean you’ve lost all the light you’ve worked so hard to find.
“but after this i’m never gonna be the same and i am never going back again”
I think this is such a beautiful and powerful way to describe how, after going through a difficult period, you can finally realize just how much you’ve changed. Not only because you feel happier now, but especially because you’ve started looking at yourself and life differently. I don’t think I’ll ever be exactly the same person I was before everything happened, but in a way, I don’t even want to be. Because I now understand so much better how important it is to take care of myself and take my own feelings seriously.
In the past, sadness and anxiety could sometimes take over my entire life. As if one bad moment automatically meant that everything was bad, and I would get completely stuck in that feeling. And although I can still experience those emotions, I’m proud of how differently I’m able to deal with them nowadays. That I can feel sad without it immediately having to consume all my thoughts and the rest of my life.
And maybe that’s what I love most about this lyric. That ‘never going back again’ doesn’t mean, to me, that I’ll never go through another difficult period, but rather that it’s a promise to myself that I’ll never treat myself the same way I used to. To keep taking care of myself, even when it’s difficult, and to never completely lose myself in my own sadness again.
I know I can’t always control how I feel, and that there will undoubtedly be moments when things get a little dark again. But I can keep choosing the things that help me find the light again. And maybe that’s what I’m ultimately most proud of. Not that I never feel sad anymore, but that I’ve learned that sadness can be a part of my life without having to become my entire life again.
Overall
I think First Light might be one of the most beautiful and hopeful songs I know. Even though the song refers so much to dark periods and sadness, to me, it actually feels incredibly positive. Because it reminds me that no matter how dark life can sometimes feel, there can always be light again. And I think that’s exactly what touches me so deeply about this song. That it’s not about a life in which nothing ever goes wrong again, but about realizing that happiness is always possible, even when you haven’t been able to believe that for a very long time.
To me, that first light represents so much more than simply being happy. It represents peace, safety, hope, and the feeling of finally starting to find yourself again. Almost as if, after such a long time, you finally have the space to simply live, without everything constantly having to feel so heavy. And maybe that’s what I find most beautiful about the song. That it shows you don’t have to stay forever in the place where you once felt so unhappy. That you can start over, even when you don’t know exactly how or when things will get better.
When I listen to this song, I mostly feel this overwhelming sense of warmth and relief. Almost as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It gives me such a freeing feeling, because it reminds me that life can be so much more than the difficult periods you’ve been through. And there’s something so comforting about that thought. That no matter how long you’ve been sitting in the darkness, it doesn’t mean it will always stay dark there. Maybe, in that moment, you have no idea where the light is supposed to come from, but that doesn’t mean it no longer exists.
And I think that’s ultimately what makes First Light so special to me. To me, it’s not a song about sadness, but rather about everything that’s still possible after that sadness. About starting over, finding yourself again, and slowly daring to believe that beautiful things might still be waiting for you, too. Because no matter how dark the tunnel may sometimes seem, there can always be light at the end of it.
