Carrie & Lowell

Sufjan Stevens named the album after his mother, and the stepfather who stayed.

His mother, Carrie, left when he was one. When he was five she married Lowell, and for three summers in Eugene, Oregon, Lowell played him Nick Drake, Judee Sill and Bob Dylan. They split up when he was eight. In December 2012 his mother was in intensive care, and he had a few days with her before she died. He recorded the album in friends’ studios across America, some of it on an iPhone in a hotel room.
