- Dust BowlEthel Cain “you’d be a writer if he didn’t leave all his hell for you” if you were to ask me what i want to do when i grow up id tell you i want to pursue a career in medicine. or that i want to pursue a career in law. that i don’t mind how long i have to be in school for. if you were to ask me what i honestly want to be do i grow up i’d think of film school. i’d think of writing all day, id dream of making people feel something with my words. but i wouldn’t ever say this out loud. i wouldn’t disappoint my parents like that. growing up the child of immigrants there’s this immense weight on your shoulders before you’re even old enough to understand the pressure. success isn’t optional, this life you’re living isn’t yours. this is the life of everyone who got you here. you are living for your parents who left it all behind for you. everyone is waiting for you to prove that this journey was worth it.
- If You Turn Back Now - Live at Carnegie HallCameron Winter me and my first girlfriend went back and forth, on and off for nearly 6 years. we are currently on our longest off streak ever. at times i feel guilty, she loved me deeply but i had reached a certain point of exhaustion that could not be come back from. living a life without her has been difficult, this cycle of on and off has been all ive ever known but lately ive been finding my own way. “the sun will stare down at the street where i buy that beautiful, beautiful, beautiful milk that is sold the day after you die” these days ive realized that the end of one love does not equate to the end of my life. the world will keep spinning after she is gone. there are more cartons of milk for me to buy still. the sun will shine down on me whether she is there or not.
- ClementineElliott Smith the summer i was 15, i drank myself to sleep nearly every weekend. i blocked all of my troubles out for my well being, all i recall now is that this was the summer i discovered elliott. i spent all of my time sober dissecting different songs of his, finding different meanings in every word he said and relating it all back to my own life somehow. this song always stuck with me. id lay in my bed, half awake, completely wasted listening to clementine. i never processed this song entirely, i took it as it related to me. clementine was elliott singing to me personally, singing about a girl too devastated by her life and the music she cant let go of that she has to drink herself to sleep every single night.
- Waco, TexasEthel Cain so much i could say about this song, its completely tragic in every way. ethel has such a way of capturing the dread of realizing you’ve been hurting the person who loves you the most by simply being yourself. but to me the most gut wrenching part of the song has always been the final verse “still i waited and i tried till it killed me, ‘cause youre right i can wait if i want but itll never be good enough like i want to believe it is” it makes you think about why we wait so long for things, is it simply because it feels a bit better to hold onto the hope that what we want might one day happen, that what we want might one day complete our life. or is it simply because it we want to avoid the grief of completely losing what we want more than anything?
- Favoritismkamen! this summer i grew deeply attached to one of my friends. i never expected it, we were acquaintances before all this. im a junior in highschool. shes a senior. i had a crush on her since early on freshman year. we began talking out of nowhere and quickly grew inseparable, she listened to my flaws and insecurities and told me i was beautiful regardless. just like claire, i was struggling to find out what happened to me. and she had no issue helping me figure it out. she liked me better than the rest after all. we grew apart, i was unsure and unaccepting of physical contact and it wasnt enough for her anymore. im thankful for what we had and im thankful for being able to relate it to such a beautiful song
- KaleidoscopeChappell Roan its always better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. love is a beautiful thing, its ever changing and presents itself in different ways constantly. love is in everything
- We don't existventuring “i dont know my name, you say thats concerning” one of the most beautiful ways to word the feeling of losing yourself completely to a relationship, not knowing who you are anymore, you are who they want you to be. they are aware of this.
