HarveyHer's My dear Beirut I know I cannot always be there but I visit every now and then. I can’t say it’s always a treat; I love you but you act as a constant reminder of what I dislike about the world and about me. You remind me of why I had to leave and build a life elsewhere. It was hard, it was not a choice, it often cost me my physical and mental health. Years of being away from loved ones made me a stranger in my own home; and no matter what I will always be sort a stranger here in France despite having my life and habits set. I now live in this limbo where I truly feel home nowhere and I hate you for this. But my visit in December 2023 was different. It was fast and intense; but it’s the only time I felt like I was visiting my home rather than a place that used to be home. I saw so many friends, ate my favorite food, spent much time with my family, there was no war. We spent hours talking and having fun through the nights, and we spent our days exploring our favorite places. It was simple but I needed it so badly, and I felt the warmth I needed. I have never been able to replicate it during any other visit, but I’m happy to say I was listening to Harvey the whole way through. Whenever I need a bit of warmth I come back to this song and it hits all the right spots. It gives me just enough to keep going.
Talk DownDijon I was miserable so I went hiking. I stopped by this small city in the Pyrenees and spent some time exploring these small streets. There are families enjoying their summer, a couple of teenagers having beers next to this river of thermal water. It smells metallic. They are all happy, and I am not. No one can see me letting out a few tears behind these sunglasses. We are surrounded by mountains and it all looks so peaceful. Talk Down has a beautiful, adventurous feeling to it. It radiates this energy of motion. It was the perfect song to be listening to.
PaulBig Thief The last time I had been in Marseille was with her. I went back on a solo day trip because I love the city and wanted to have some seafood. Walking through the streets somehow felt like reclaiming the city; where we had walked together I was now walking alone and I could now enjoy the place without it only being tied to memories of us. On the train back home, my music app was playing music on shuffle and I fell asleep. When I woke up this song was playing and I had it on repeat for the rest of the trip. It is a beautiful track about a love that has been. It reminded me of these evenings when it was just us two loving each other.
Shark SmileBig Thief I always come back to this song when I feel alone. It makes me feel some type of warmth, some type of presence. It is a heavy song given what it is about but has such an upbeat chorus that just makes you want to slowly shake your head on beat while sadness takes possession of the rest of your body. What a beautiful feeling.
