- These DaysNico nico is fascinating and for this track it was incredible to learn that jackson browne was the composer for the track. one of the great things about music is collaboration and it’s very cool to see such unique styles and storytelling personas come together to create beautiful art.
- RingsPinegrove i think songs that are difficult to decipher the meaning of their lyrics are fun. is it nonsense? no, at least i don’t think so…but it does beg a closer reading, and yet at the same time it really doesn’t. with such a unique sound both of instrumentation and vocals, Rings tends more towards a song whose meaning is there for whoever is listening to it, an individual experience
- A Higher PlaceTom Petty Sneaky fourth favorite after the first three tracks in the album, this has a mix of tempo, poetic lyricism, emotion and thematic elements. It’s not too flashy but it’s poignant.
- WildflowersTom Petty The perfect introduction song. Plays off the last song to create a cyclical element to the album. Introduces Petty and his persona for the album wonderfully—a man who is trying to be supportive to a lost lover but is nonetheless heartbroken.
- You Don't Know How It FeelsTom Petty this just brings the listener in. peppy but already introducing the heartbreak themes, it has the juice to get you hooked on your first listen while still being so relatable
- CreepStone Temple Pilots this is the better creep. radiohead’s is too self indulgent (“oh poor me i get no attention”) whereas STP’s largely acoustic power ballad captures a unique feeling of decay within a person’s soul, a gradual descent into madness and uncontrollable desire.
- Hunger StrikeTemple Of The Dog Temple Of The Dog, tribute band for Andrew Wood, is essentially Pearl Jam plus Chris Cornell. A supergroup before the group itself, Hunger Strike is a fantastic song of raw emotion showcasing early Vedder vocals paired with quintessential Cornell power and talent. Unlike Audioslave or Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog has that more spacey, fluid sound that Pearl Jam captured. Guitar riffs ride high over in-the-pocket drums, that weave from simple fills to jamming power rolls. Vedder kills the long held notes in the choruses as Cornell comes in to add even more depth to a fantastic song for their deceased friend.
